I aim to use the interdisciplinary methods of psychology, neuroscience, and computational approaches to address questions of what it means to understand something – what people consider to be a better ‘theory’ or ‘explanation’ of something – and the implications of this for social cognition. My main research focus is on applying this to attitude and stereotype strength: examining if attitudes and stereotypes that have qualities of ‘better theories’ end up being more influential and resistant to change. I am also interested in curiosity (the intrinsic motivation towards better understanding),  how exploration and variability can help lead to improved understanding, and how these processes might help people organize their goals and values into structures such as coherent goal hierarchies that allow for effective pursuit of valued goals.
